Introduction

Master advanced data science tools and techniques and learn to apply them across a range of industries.

Why Applied Data Science at ARU?

  • Gain skills in vital areas like data mining, machine learning, and statistical modelling, ensuring a well-rounded grasp of data science.
  • Engage with real-world cases and industry projects when you study for a Masters degree in Data Science that equips you with practical skills aligned with current industry needs.
  • Transition into data science whatever your experience – no computing or data-related degree required.
  • Experience hands-on learning, including projects and in-depth exploration, fostering practical application of data science principles.

Data science promises to enhance technology, business models, and decision-making across a range of sectors – from manufacturing to social care; and cyber security to banking.

There’s a strong demand for data scientists. Our Applied Data Science Master’s degree will give you the knowledge and analytical skills you need to join this rapidly growing sector.

Our MSc Applied Data Science degree takes you, step by step, through the major building blocks of data science.

By studying at ARU, you’ll gain highly marketable skills such as programming, data acquisition and cleaning, data analysis and feature extraction, data visualization, data mining, and machine learning. You’ll become proficient in advanced data science tools and techniques too – such as deep learning and predictive models – and learn about artificial intelligence.

And finally, you’ll complete a data science research project, based on your real-life experiences of working in a part of our University.

We’re always focused on the needs of industry and the real-world application of data science. And so, we incorporate real datasets and industry-simulated projects into our course modules. You’ll find this helps you to understand the challenges and constraints that organisations face – and hone your skills and expertise accordingly.

As a graduate, you’ll be ready to apply your data science skills to a range of careers.

TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT

1 year full-time

In your MSc Data Science you’ll start with a general introduction to data science techniques, exploring the core maths concepts that data analysts use through a mixture of lectures and hands-on practical sessions.

We will also look at high-level computer programming using Python, a powerful yet intuitive programming language. You won’t need any previous programming experience to take part.

Alongside programming, we look at the principles of data mining and machine learning, so that you’re able to analyse data, gather insights, and apply those insights to real-world challenges.

Crucially, our Data Science programme looks at how data science is used, designing and developing data-driven prediction models. You’ll practice with tools such as powerful Python libraries including NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Scikit-learn and Seaborn.

And finally, you’ll work on a Major Project. This starts with a one-week placement in an area of our University. You’ll use the week to identify the topic of your Major Project, which takes the form of a 10,000-word report. You’ll identify issues, evaluate information, determine solutions, develop data science artefacts as appropriate, process data, and present your findings. Your project supervisor will support you all the way.

When studying for your Masters degree in Data Science, we’ll assess you in several ways, including time-constrained assessments, coursework assignments and a Major Project (dissertation). Our module case studies and Major Project assess your ability to analyse situations, identify key issues, select, synthesise and apply techniques and skills, and evaluate the appropriateness of solutions when compared to industrial practice. Your dissertation will be based on a real-world scenario.

Modules are subject to change and availability on the MSc Data Science programme.
