With our Software Engineering degree, you’ll not only build your skills in coding and programming – you’ll understand what businesses are looking for and why.

As a student, you’ll challenge preconceptions and boundaries, work on a range of projects in different media, and produce a standout portfolio when you graduate.

You’ll work with industry through projects, placements and live briefs, growing your network, which could result in offers of work before you even graduate.

As a graduate, you could go on to work in main-line business software applications development or web development. Graduates may pursue roles including software developer, web designer and developer, database developer, software tester, systems analyst and architect, as well as roles managing technology to support a range of public and private sector organisations. With additional teacher training, teaching computing at both secondary and further education levels could also be an option available to you.

As students step into the world of higher education, many seek guidance on how to transition from the classroom to the workplace. Our Career Development Center serve as pivotal resources, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional ambitions. By offering specialized tools, resources, and personalized advising, we help students prepare for internships, jobs, and long-term career success.

Our goal is to provide ARU students with the right tools for career planning and successful employment through; an array of career advising services and employability skills programs to support students’ personal and career development to meet employers’ hiring needs. In addition, we build corporate partnerships and liaise with companies to avail experiential and career opportunities and help employers reach and attract the right talent.

The support continues after you graduate, with lifelong access to our Alumni Office.

Teaching and Modules

Our course starts with an introduction to high-level programming. You’ll use industry-standard tools to design and test simple programs; and explore programming languages including C#, C++ and Java. You’ll learn about computer and operating systems, and the hardware and software used to process data.

You continue to develop your programming skills throughout the course, as well as exploring databases and security; and designing and programming data-driven applications.

There’s also the chance to explore a subject of interest in your Final Project, which is a substantial piece of research or development work.

A foundation year prepares you for the rest of your course, and focuses on general skills such as researching and referencing, numeracy and ICT, and communication. We’ll also start to look at some more subject-specific topics.

Modules are assessed through a combination of coursework (coding, reports, logbooks, presentations, group and individual projects) and exams. Indicatively, the amount of coursework in relation to exams is 70% to 30%.
